Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) / Diploma in Education and Training (DET)

The In-Service Professional Graduate Certificate (PGCE) or Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is awarded by Canterbury Christ Church University.

As an in-service training programme, trainees on the full PGCE or DET programme must be employed or working voluntarily as a teacher. A short Introductory Award in Education and Training (see below) is available if you are not in-service as a teacher.

Successful completion of the PGCE or DET allows you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status with the Society for Education and Training.

The overall programme

The programme aims to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding of teaching the sector which includes those who teach in 6th Form Colleges, Further Education Colleges, Adult and Community Learning, 14 -19 units in Schools and Academies, Private Organisation and the Public Services.

Diploma/ProfGCE in Education and Training

Both programmes are offered as a part-time mode of study on Monday evenings from 6.00 – 9.00pm, with tutorials from 4.00 – 5.45pm or by appointment. Some sessions during the year are arranged online instead of in class, allowing you the flexibility to complete the study when you wish. The programmes last two years in total and are aimed at teachers and trainers who are already employed.


The programmes comprise of modules over the two years. Assessment is by assignments, teaching observations and continuous professional development.

  • To provide initial training for practising and prospective teachers and trainers
  • To respond to the changing needs of employers in the lifelong learning sector
  • To encourage the growth of professionalism in the lifelong learning sector

In addition:

You can also choose to take an Introductory Award (20 credits level 4), a specialist route in English or Mathematics or Teaching Learners with Special Needs.

Award in Education and Training

This is for those interested in a teaching career in further and/or adult and community education and trainers in the public and private sector. You do not have to be in a teaching role to undertake the course. The short course consists of Module 1 only (20 credits at level 4) and you may use this short course as credit should you decide to join the Diploma course at a later stage.

Specialist Pathways in English, Mathematics and Teaching Learners with Special Needs

For teachers of English (ESOL, literacy, functional skills) or maths (numeracy, functional skills) or working with learners with special needs, the Diploma, ProfGCE, Certificate can also be taken as subject specialist qualifications.

To join the pathway qualification in the Certificate or Diploma, you need to have 50% of your teaching in the specific subject specialism. You will attend two modules in a subject specialist group at one of our partner colleges and benefit from working with subject specialists as well as learning about specific pedagogy for your subject.

Qualified Teacher Status Learning and Skills

Please note: This teaching qualification does not automatically confer ‘Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills’ (QTLS), so you will need to apply for this status post qualification. Please see

Entry Requirements

Diploma/ProfGCE in Education and Training

  • Those enrolling will normally possess at least a minimum Level 3 qualification in their own area of specialism. To apply for the ProfGCE, you must be a graduate.
  • You’ll need to demonstrate at interview your ability to benefit from the course and to meet the essential teaching requirement of at least 40hrs in Year 1 and 60 hours in Year 2.

Award in Education and Training

You do not have to be in a teaching role to undertake the course. The short course consists of Module 1 only (20 credits at level 4) and you may use this short course as credit should you decide to join the Diploma course at a later stage.

Application for Interview

To apply please complete the PGCE/DET application form and read the accompanying privacy notice for staff.

Please download and save this form to your computer, re-naming the file to include your name. Type your responses in the boxes then re-save the file and email it to Electronic signatures are acceptable.

If you are in-service and already working in a college or equivalent, or about to start your teaching role, you must secure approval from a suitable mentor and from a line manager. They must then also complete the relevant sections on the application form before submission – sections 11 & 12.

If you are not in-service please leave sections 11 & 12 blank but ensure that you complete all the other sections of the application form. As an ‘in-service’ programme, a place on the PGCE/DET cannot be offered until the employer and mentor agreement is signed.


If your application meets the entry requirements you will be invited to interview. We aim to respond to applications promptly and interviews are typically within a month of application.

As part of the interview there will be a brief, informal presentation, a short ‘free writing’ exercise and a 1:1 discussion/interview. It is anticipated that this whole process will take a maximum of 2 hours in total.

You may be asked to complete an online numeracy and literacy assessment and will be forwarded a link to access and complete these in your own time. Please note this is not part of the selection process but helps to identify areas for support on the programme.

Enrolment, registration and induction

Enrolment and Registration

Following successful interview at Reigate College, you will be offered a place on the course, either on an unconditional basis (i.e. you meet all of the criteria for admission) or on a conditional basis (i.e. there is still some aspect that needs confirmation). Once offered an unconditional place, you will be invited to formally apply via Canterbury Christ Church University’s website (no further interview required).

The university will then contact you directly to register as a student with them. This must be done to complete the enrolment and registration process. Part of registration is confirming how programme fees will be paid. It is also an opportunity to obtain a university student ID card which will allow you access to the campuses for study and book loans, should you wish.


The first two sessions of Year 1 are mainly given over to induction and will include:

  • Final enrolment procedures
  • Introduction to the team, including the Link Tutor from Canterbury Christ Church University
  • Tour of the premises
  • Introduction to the content and assessment requirements of the programme
  • Introduction to IT requirements of the programme
  • Meeting your colleagues

Fees and Funding

The full cost of tuition fees need to be met. In many cases students will borrow the amount of the tuition fees from Student Finance England. Alternatively you can self-fund or your employer may pay for you.

Teaching and Learning

It may seem an oversimplification of the very complex and multi-faceted discipline of education but it is fair to say that the following approaches are at the heart of all good teaching:

  • A clear understanding of student needs
  • A varied range of teaching and learning strategies that differentiate according to these needs
  • A real enthusiasm for the subject and ability to communicate this
  • An affinity with students and ability to build and maintain rapport
  • Subject knowledge, including understanding of assessment and the wider context of the subject

Whilst we acknowledge that especially adult learning draws immensely from the skills and experiences of the learners in the class as well as of the teacher, we would like to commit ourselves as tutors to delivering our sessions in class and on-line with these successful approaches in mind at all times.

What is particularly important to note is that although you are studying an academic higher education programme, there is a vital vocational element. For this reason sessions will promote teaching and learning strategies that represent best practice in post-16yrs teaching.

Therefore alongside the expected lectures, tutorials and discussions you will also experience a range of teaching and learning approaches, eg

  • Warmer activities to recap prior learning – quizzes, gap fills, card sorts
  • Interactive presentations with targeted Q & A
  • Group work – pair problem solving or larger group projects
  • Student led presentations and micro-teaches
  • E-learning approaches including discussion forums and streaming videos
  • Role play, demonstration and simulation
  • Guest lectures from experts and senior college managers

Nicola Sowe (Programme Coordinator / Lecturer on DET/PGCE)

Nicola Sowe

Nikki first worked in the field of Nursing before taking a career change into Education. She held a variety of Teaching and Learning roles whilst gaining an MSc in Teaching and Learning and became an Advanced Practitioner. Nikki successfully established herself as a Teacher Educator becoming Head of a teacher training department in an FE college. Since then she has moved into a consultative role with colleges and other training organisations in particular advising on new teacher development, CPD and quality. She has also been an External Examiner and External Advisor for Teacher Training Programmes. At present, she is studying for her EdD.

Peter Lyon (Link Tutor from Canterbury Christ Church University)

Peter Lyon

Peter started in education 25 years ago as an EFL/ESOL teacher and in 2003 he became a CELTA trainer. He worked in Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College from 1999 to 2012 in ESOL, and functional skills English and maths. In 2013 he moved to the Professional Development team running and co-running the Additional Diploma for Teaching Numeracy/maths; the PTLLS/AET and the DET/PGCE courses. He was also involved in running CPD sessions and mentoring teachers across the college’s four sites.

In 2016 he spent 9 months working as a Teaching, Learning and Assessment coach for The Manchester College in offender learning, working to improve the quality of the Education Department in two establishments. He began working for Canterbury Christ Church University as a Senior Lecturer in PCET in March 2017.

Judith Lawler

Judith has had a long and varied career in education and is qualified to post-graduate level. Her earlier teaching posts were in secondary education in greater London comprehensive schools where she has taught Maths, Geography & IT. Judith held various responsibilities at middle management level, including Head of IT & Business Studies.

After 15 years in secondary education, Judith transferred to a Further Education college setting (FE) where she has worked for over 20 years. In FE, she has held different roles including advising on and implementing cross-college learning development initiatives, such as key skills, before holding the post of advanced practitioner. In this capacity, Judith mentored staff to raise teaching standards and provided college-wide staff development. Since 2005, she has managed and contributed to teacher training courses in the FE setting from introductory to full teaching qualifications, including PGCE.

Mark Inwood

Mark Inwood

Mark began his ITT as a Biologist with a concurrent PGCE alongside his research into insect communication. He went straight into industry, training Lee Valley tomato & cucumber growers in Biological Pest Control for example. He swapped insect bugs for computer bugs at Beecham Pharmaceuticals, completing the transition to complete “computer nerd” on outplacement, training and programming for an MIS Software House. Many years of formal classroom teaching, training, coaching and mentoring for organisations as diverse as the BBC, BCS, BA, Arthur Andersen, Arcadia, Sumitomo, Chrysler, Pedigree Pet Foods, DoH, DSS etc. brought him to Reigate College where he consolidated all this into his QTLS qualification in 2010.

As a scientist with published research papers, Mark is well placed to help students’ assignment writing, research and referencing work. Formal training from the University of Greenwich updated his electronic information sourcing skills and has been particularly useful in guiding students to research materials that are accessible through our partner HEI’s online service.

The Van Wyk Award from Canterbury Christ Church University

Congratulations to Reigate College teacher Abbie Sandilands, who won the Van Wyk Award from Canterbury Christ Church University.

Garnett Prize, University of Greenwich

Student teachers on Reigate College’s PGCE programme were delighted to have their hard work recognised when two students were awarded the prestigious Garnett prize. At a ceremony held in the College’s County Theatre, PGCE staff, students, college managers and representatives from the University of Greenwich gathered to celebrate this commendable achievement.

Students Ruth Hounsome and Gina Marshall received the award from Dr Gordon Ade-Ojo (all pictured) from the university. They were praised for their creative approach to teaching and the high standard of their academic writing. Programme Director at the time, Dan Lodge, summarised their achievements: “In our first year of teacher training at the College it is a great honour for two of our students to be recognised for this prestigious award. It’s reassuring to know that our programme is being well received, not only by those attending it, but also by those who are responsible for overseeing the programme at a national level.”

We have found over the years that due to the complicated and fast-changing nature of Initial Teacher Training we often get similar questions from prospective students each year. With this in mind we have created this handy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) webpage to provide fuller guidance and which will be updated as and when a new popular question arises!

What sector is your programme aimed at?

It is primarily aimed at trainee teachers who want to work in post-16: FE colleges, sixth form colleges, 14-19yrs in Schools, Adult Ed, prisons, charities, private training sector and public sector organisations. It will also, however, provide a route into teaching in schools (see below).

It does not achieve QTS, but you can seek QTLS (see below).

What is QTLS?

QTLS stands for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status. It is the professional status for teachers in the post-16 sector, just as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is the professional status for school teachers.

Will your programmes qualify me to teach in Primary and Secondary schools?

If you are solely interested in teaching in the Primary or Secondary sectors you will want to consider the associated professional programme leading to QTS see

If you successfully achieve the ProfGCE/DET and achieved your QTLS status you would then be able to apply for school teacher jobs alongside those that took the school route and achieved QTS.

Will I be graded on my PGCE?

All PGCE/DET programmes are mapped against grading criteria. Successful completion of all criteria for the PGCE/DET will result in a pass being awarded. However, at present, students will also receive a grade of Outstanding (Grade 1), Good (Grade 2) or Needs Improvement (Grade 3). This grading does not appear on the final certificate.

Can I apply without the confirmation of my teaching?

Yes, you can still apply for the programmes but you will not be offered an unconditional place until teaching is secured. You may want to consider the Introductory Award (Module 1) as an alternative option.

Do you need to be teaching to do the PGCE/DET?

Yes, it is an in-service model of Initial Teacher Training. You must be employed or working voluntarily as a teacher with support from a Subject Mentor for at least 40 hours in Year 1 and 60 hours in Year 2. These hours must accumulate across the year.
